Soviet war in Afghanistan

Soviets invade Afghanistan - 24 December 1979

I remember this time in history clearly. I was spending Christmas at home - RAF Digby where my Dad (Roy Kissack) was serving at 399 Signals Unit.

I remember it clearly as something 'was up', something very different was happening. I'd lived at RAF Digby for many years and was familiar with its peaceful and calm day to day routine. But this Christmas was different, suddenly things got very busy and personnel where called back from leave and even, I understand, from local public houses etc.

I didn't know what was happening at the time, and Dad would never talk about his work, but it was clear to me, once the news broke and the media reported the invasion, that Digby 399SU had clearly been on the case from day one (or more likely sooner).
